Chapter One: Baby Boy’s First Birthday

Remember this sweet baby boy’s newborn session with 3 generations? It felt like just yesterday to me! Fast forward one year, and I got to capture his first birthday photos too.

This session was all about capturing how much he’s grown and I loved that his big brother, parents, and grandparents came to celebrate his special 1st birthday milestone. The session ended with a smash — a cake smash, that is! I got to photograph his big brother’s 1st birthday photos too. It means the world to me when clients return. This beautiful family had just moved after their last session, so I truly appreciated them driving all the way out for this session.

I loved this beautiful baby girl’s 1st birthday photoshoot! She is as happy as she is gorgeous, and her sweet personality shined from the moment the session started. Although this was a short and sweet mini session, she filled every minute with bright smiles and expressive little moments that made her gallery so special.

Mini sessions are perfect for capturing updated milestone portraits while keeping things simple and stress-free. Even in a shorter session, I can capture a variety of sweet photos full of personality.

One whole year. Twelve months of growth and milestones — and this handsome baby boy celebrated it in all-star style with a “My Rookie Year” first birthday photoshoot. I also got to photograph his newborn session, and it was so fun to see him return with so much personality and smiles. Comparing his newborn gallery to his first birthday portraits shows just how much changes in a year. I loved that his big sisters joined in for some sweet sibling photos too!

Keep the setup clean and simple.
The focus should always stay on your baby.

Choose comfortable, neutral outfits
Neutrals photograph beautifully and a comfy baby is a happy baby!

Schedule at 11–12 months.
This allows time to use the photos for birthday invitations or party decor.

Pair it with a newborn session.

Getting to capture this absolutely beautiful baby girl’s photos from newborn to 1st birthday has been such a treat. She was such a gorgeous newborn with a full head of the most amazing red hair, and although that deep rich color gradually “washed out”, her hair is still as beautiful as ever and she is SO adorable! Check out her 6 month photos too — what a cutie.

I also love her mama’s style as she chose white and neutral palettes to ensure the focus stayed exactly where it should—on the cute baby! This creates a bright, classic and timeless aesthetic with a cohesive first-year gallery that flows beautifully from newborn to one year old.

There is something undeniably magical about photographing babies between 6 and 8 months old. This sweet “sitter” stage is one of the most adorable milestones—babies are full of personality, learning to sit on their own, and bursting with curiosity about the world around them. This cute family’s little boys have the BEST curls! I’ve been so lucky to capture their first boy’s newborn and 1st birthday photos, and again when he welcomed his new baby brother, and now baby brother just turned ONE!
